How to find a journal by title

Journals by title

I need to find a particular journal title.  How do I do that?

We frequently hear this question in the library.  It is easy to find a journal by its title, you just need to use the journal finder (for online sources) or the library's classic catalog (for print sources).   Not every title is available online, so you may need to check both the journal finder and the catalog.

Follow the steps on this guide's tabs to check if Canisius owns a particular title.

If you need help, please stop by the reference desk, call us at 716-888-8411 or email (libweb@canisius.edu).

Finding online journals by title

Perhaps you are looking for a particular journal and you want to see if the library has online access. The easiest way to check if Canisius has access to a particular online title is to use the journal finder.  The journal finder can be found under the "Search & Find" button from the library home page.

It is very easy to use, either type in the title of the journal you seek or click on the letter the journal starts with

Online Access

If Canisius has online access to the title it then it will appear in the result list.  Look through the result list to see what dates each database gives access to.  Click on the link to the database that best fits your needs. If the title (or needed date) does not appear here then you may want to check our print holdings.  The years available for our print holdings are listed with these results but  more detailed information is listed in the library catalog.  Please check the "print journals" tab for instructions on searching the library catalog.  If Canisius does not have access either online or in print then you may want to submit an interlibrary loan for the article.

Finding literary periodicals

The Canisius library has a collection of almost 100 literary magazine titles.  Literary magazines usually publish short stories, poetry and essays along with literary criticism, book reviews, biographical profiles of authors, interviews and letters. The library catalog will help you find these literary magazines.   Follow these steps to check if Canisius owns the title:

  • Select Subject from the drop-down meny and type in literary magazine
  • Click on title.  This will take you to the full catalog record which will give the dates we own and the location of the item.
  • Items with a location of literary magazine are located on the lower level next to the stairway.

What to do if Canisius does not have access to the journal

If Canisius does not have access either online or in print then you may want to submit an interlibrary loan for the article you need from the journal.

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service where current Canisius faculty, staff and students can borrow books or articles that are owned by another library.  If you would like to request an Interlibrary loan, please login and fill out the correct form for the item you need.  If you would like further information, you may want to look at out Interlibrary loan policy.
