Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy Resources

Encyclopedias:

  • The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy - An excellent freely accessible resource providing detailed, scholarly information on key topics and philosophers in all areas of philosophy.  Search or just browse the compiled list on Ancient Philosophy and see the excellent article presenting an overview of Ancient Greek Philosophy*Note that most of the philosophy of Ancient Rome was imported from Ancient Greece.
  • Routledge encyclopedia of philosophy - Scholarly articles on all aspects of philosophy, with an excellent list of references and further reading.  Using their "subject guides" is very effective for browsing topics and individuals of ancient philosphy.

Databases:

  • Philosopher's index - Search for scholarly journal articles as well as books on philosophy and related interdisciplinary fields.  This database may be difficult for beginners, so try it out and if you have questions don't hesitate to ask a librarian (see Research Help to the right)!
